Granny Square Beanie - Mini Mother's Day Series Part 3

Hello Friends.  It's time for part 3 of our Mini Mother's Day pattern series and this week continuing on with the granny square theme, we have the Granny Square Beanie.  I'm sure any mother would love this for Mother's Day or you could even make a head start on your Christmas gifts.

You can find part 1 and part 2 here...

The hat is designed to fit an adult and is quite snug around the brim and slightly slouchie at the top.  4 squares are joined together with ribbing added at the brim and granny stitch shaping at the crown.  It works up pretty fast, making it a great quick and easy gift.

I have used Stylecraft Batik Elements DK in the shade Titanium and matched it with Jarol Heritage DK in Winter White.  Although I have used different colours this time, all of the patterns are designed to be a matching set and you can of course use the same colourway for each one.

There is an ad free, pdf version of this pattern available in my online stores, thank you for helping to support my work...

Granny Square Beanie

Materials

Stylecraft Batik Elements DK & Jarol Heratige DK (less than 100g in total)
4mm (G) hook & 3.5mm (E)
Darning needle

Size

Adult

Gauge
Granny square 4 ½ inches (11 ½ cm)

Ability

Intermediate

Abbreviations US Terms (UK conversion)

sc - single crochet (double crochet)
dc – double crochet (treble crochet)
ch – chain
sp - space
st(s) - stitch(es)
sk – skip
bl – back loop
mc – main colour
cc – contrast colour
dec - decrease

Decreasing:  A decrease is worked over 2 sps as follows, dc in the 1st sp, dc2tog over same and next sp, dc in 2nd sp.

The first round of decreases is worked where the corners join, all following decreases are worked over the sps before and after previous decreases.  You are effectively making a granny square in reverse.

Other notes:  Alternate between cc and mc each round and join in new colours with a sl st.  If you wish to make in only 1 colour, sl st to corner sp when starting a new round.

Ch3 at start of round counts as dc (you may replace with a standing st or chainless dc if you prefer).  The larger sized hook is used for granny squares and crown.  The smaller hook is used for ribbing.

Granny Square (make 4)

With large hook and cc, ch4 and join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1 (Right side), Ch3, 2dc into ring, [ch2, 3dc into ring] 3 times, ch2, join with sl st to top ch3.

Round 2 Join new colour in corner sp, [ch3, 2dc,  ch2, 3dc] in same sp, in next and every sp [3dc, ch2, 3dc], join with sl st to top ch3.

Round 3 Join new colour in corner sp, ch3, 2dc in same sp, ch2, 3dc in same sp, 3dc in each sp across sides, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in each corner sp, join with sl st to top ch3.

Rounds 4-6 repeat round 3.

Joining squares

With right sides together sc or sl st 4 squares together to form a tube.

Ribbing

Row 1 With right side facing, small hook and mc, attach yarn at any seam with a sl st, ch9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch,  sl st to next 2 sts along bottom of granny square, turn. (8sc)

Row 2 Sk both sl sts, sc in each st working in bl only, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, sc in each st working in bl only, sl st to next 2 sts along bottom of granny square, turn.

Repeat row 2 & 3 until you have worked around the entire hat.  Do not fasten off.  Turning work inside out, sl st or sc both edges together to join, fasten off.

Crown Shaping

With mc, right side facing and large hook, join yarn with sl st in any sp that is not a corner sp where squares are joined.

Round 1 Ch3, 2dc in same sp, 3dc in each sp around working a dec at each join (over sp before and after the join), join with sl st to top ch3.

Rounds 2-5 repeat round 1 placing your decreases above decreases in previous round.

Round 6 Ch3 (counts as 1st dc of dec), work 4 dec
around, join with sl st to top ch3.  Leaving a long tail fasten off and thread yarn onto a darning needle.  Work through each stitch and pull tight to close top of hat.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

I do hope you enjoy the pattern and give it a go and make sure to stop by next week for our final pattern in the series.

All the best

Granny Square Fingerless Mitts - Mini Mother's Day series part 2

Hello everyone, it's time for part 2 of our mini Mother's Day pattern series and this week we have the mitts to match the boot cuffs we made in part 1.  It's another granny square design (you know how I love granny squares) and they are quick and easy to make.

The mitts will fit an average adults hands but can be adjusted for bigger or smaller hands by going up or down a hook size.  You could even use less rounds for your squares to make them the right size for a child.  The pattern is easily adjustable.

I have used Stylecraft Batik Elements in shade Magnesium and Stylecraft Batik in Cream to make my mitts, but you could use any colours you wish or make in just one colour.  This is a great project to play around with colour, the options are limitless.  I would love to see yours, why not join the Facebook group and share your photos or use #lullabylodge on Instagram.

As always an ad free pdf version of this pattern is available in my online stores, thank you for helping to support my work...

Fingerless Granny Square Mitts

Materials

Stylecraft Batik DK / Elements in 2 colours
 3.5mm (E) hook & 3mm (E)
Darning needle

Size

One size

Gauge
Granny square 3 ¾ inches (9 ½ cm)

Ability

Intermediate

Abbreviations US Terms (UK conversion)

sc - single crochet (double crochet)
dc – double crochet (treble crochet)
ch – chain
sp - space
st(s) - stitch(es)
sk – skip
bl – back loop
mc – main colour
cc – contrast colour

Sizing:  One size, fits most.  If you would like a slightly smaller or larger size, go up or down a hook size accordingly.  You could also make these for a child by using less rounds in your granny squares, check the square against the hand you are making it for to get an idea of how many rounds you need.  If making for a child you might also want to adjust the number of chains you make for the ribbing at the wrist, just make the chain as long as you would like the ribbing to be.

Other notes:  Starting with mc alternate between mc and cc each round and join in new colours with a sl st, if you wish to make in only 1 colour, sl st to corner sp when starting a new round.     The larger sized hook is used for granny squares.  The smaller hook is used for the ribbing.

Granny Square Make 4

With large hook ch4 and join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1 (Right side), Ch3, 2dc into ring, [ch2, 3dc into ring] 3 times, ch2, join with sl st to top ch3.

Round 2 Join new colour in corner sp, ch3, 2dc in same sp, ch2, 3dc in same sp, in next and every sp [3dc, ch2, 3dc], join with sl st to top ch3.

Round 3 Join new colour in corner sp, ch3, 2dc in same sp, ch2, 3dc in same sp, 3dc in each sp across sides, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in each corner sp, join with sl st to top ch3.

Round 4 & 5 Repeat round 3.

Joining squares

With right sides together sew or sl st 2 squares together along one side...

...on the opposite side join only the top 3 sts together, then the bottom 3.  This leaves a gap for your thumb.

Ribbing

Row 1 With right side facing, small hook and mc, attach yarn at any seam with a sl st, ch15, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch,  sl st to next 2 sts along bottom of granny square, turn.

Row 2 Sk both sl sts, sc in each st working in bl only, turn.

Row 3 Ch1, sc in each st working in bl only, sl st to next 2 sts along bottom of granny square, turn.

Repeat row 2 & 3 until you have worked around the entire cuff.  Do not fasten off.  Turning work inside out, sl st or sc both edges together to join, fasten off.

Join yarn to top of mitt with sl st at side seam and repeat ribbing instructions around top of mitt, but ch only 4 to start.  Fasten off.

Join yarn with sl st to bottom of thumb hole (where 2 squares are joined).  Repeat ribbing instructions around the thumb hole, but ch only 4 to start.

Fasten off and weave in ends, complete another mitt with the remaining squares.

I hope you enjoyed this pattern and if you did be sure to pop back soon for part 3 and subscribe so you don't miss any posts.

See you soon...

Mum's Meatloaf - A fond memory of my childhood...

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well.  Mostly here in Windsor we have had a very mild winter, but I know many of you have been having snow and storms and at this time of year we are all craving some comfort food.

I have fond childhood memories of on such days eating my Mum's meatloaf.  She would serve it up with a steaming pile of buttery mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables and now I make it for my son and he loves it too.

The recipe is also very versatile, while my mother only used it to make meatloaf, it also makes delicious meatballs and burgers.  So I thought I would share the recipe with you all, my Mum's Meatloaf...

Mum's Meatloaf

Ingredients

500g beef mince
5 or 6 lincolnshire sausages (skinned)
Tomato ketchup (1-2 tbsp)
Brown Sauce (1-2 tbsp)
1 onion (finely chopped)
Salt & pepper to taste
1 egg

  • Preheat oven to 180℃
  • In a large bowl add all the ingredients and with your hands mix everything together, give it a really good squidge
  • Place the meatloaf mix into a loaf tin, or simply form into shape and place on a roasting tray
  • Cook for 45 mins
  • Best served with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables and gravy

If you are not from the UK and don't know what Brown Sauce is, it kind of has the same consistency as tomato ketchup only brown.  The flavour is similar to Worcester Sauce, maybe slightly sweeter.  You could substitute a dash of worcester Sauce if you don't have any.

Pin it for later...

I hope you will give this recipe a try, it really is delicious and if you do be sure to let me know in the comments below.

See you soon...

Hello everyone, it's time for our second installment of our Charity Stash Bash CAL.  If you are knew to my blog then you might like to check out the link below, which will give you all the details.

This month we will be making beanies.  Hats are always a sought after item in the shoe boxes every year and are another quick and easy make, great for stash busting.  I have designed this pattern to be a base for your own creativity.

The hats are very basic giving you plenty of scope to adapt and embellish the pattern to make it unique.  You can easily add stripes, pom poms, tassels or stitch on a cute flower or applique.

The pdf for this pattern is available free for Crochet for a Cause for 1 week only, from 15th June 2020

Other notes:  Hat is worked in rounds starting from the crown.  Ribbing may be added and is worked sideways, joining onto the main body of hat as you go.  Beginners may wish to forego the ribbing to make the pattern beginner friendly.

This hat pattern is designed to give you a blank canvas to work from, enabling you to and adapt and embellish as you wish.  Change colours to add stripes or add flowers and appliques to make a truly unique hat.

Increasing:  Increases are made by working 2 stitches into the same stitch.  An easy way to remember how to increase evenly around is as follows –

Round 2, make 1 increase in every st.  Round 3, inc in the 1st of every 2 sts.  Round 4, inc in the 1st of every 3 sts.  Round 5, inc in the 1st of every 4 sts and so on for as many increases as your required size states.

Round 1 Ch3 (counts as dc), 9dc into ring, join with sl st to top ch3.  (10dc)

Round 2 Ch3, dc in same st, 2dc in every st around, join with sl st to top ch3.  (20dc)

Round 3 Ch3, dc in same st, [dc in next st, 2dc in next st] repeat around, dc in last st, join with sl st to top ch3.  (30dc)

Continue in the same way increasing 10 sts evenly each round for 0 [1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4] more rounds.

Newborn, 6 months, toddler, teen, large sizes only

Continue in the same way for 1 more round, increasing 5sts evenly.  You will need to increase in the 1st of every 6 [_, 8, _, 10, _, 12, _, 14] sts.

You should now have – 35 [40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75] sts

Hat body

Round 1 Ch3, dc in each st around, join with sl st to top ch3.

Repeat round 1 a further 2[3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10] times.

If you are a beginner or would like a more basic hat and don’t want to add the ribbing, add more rounds of dc here until you reach required length.

Ribbing

With 4.5mm hook, join new yarn with sl st and Ch5 [5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8]

Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, sl st into next 2sts on brim of hat, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have worked around the entire brim of hat.  Turn hat inside out and sl st a seam to join ribbing.  Fasten off and weave in ends.
