Equipment

Let's start by getting all the necessary items ready. Just like most patterns for baby blankets, we'll only require a few crochet supplies - yarn, a crochet hook, scissors, and a darning needle. Doesn't sound too daunting, does it?

Choosing Your Yarn

I've chosen a pretty 100% cotton yarn called Drops Paris for this baby blanket. It comes in an excellent variety of coloured shades. I love it because it's a dream to work with and produces a wonderfully soft and squishy blanket.

The cool cotton makes it perfect for baby during the spring and summer months, or you could create a slightly larger version as a delightful summer throw. This versatile yarn would also make for an excellent picnic blanket if made in a larger size.

dolly mixture sweets

The colours I've selected for this blanket were inspired by the nostalgic Dolly Mixtures sweets my mum used to treat us to when we were children. If you're from the UK, perhaps you've also enjoyed these delightful sweet treats. Of course, you're welcome to use any colours that catch your eye for your own blanket, providing a great opportunity to put your stash to good use.

Selecting the Perfect Crochet Hook

For our lovely Linen Stitch blanket, we'll be using a 5 mm hook. I love to use these Clover Soft Touch hooks, as they have a smooth surface and an ergonomic handle, making it a joy to work with.  The hook literally glides through your yarn like butter.

Handy Tools and Notions

Additionally, you'll need some helpful items like a pair of scissors, a measuring tape or gauge ruler, and a darning needle for neatly securing loose yarn ends. While not essential, stitch markers can be quite convenient for keeping track of your stitches.

Exploring the Lovely Linen Stitch Pattern

Now, let's delve into the delightful stitch pattern we'll be using for this cozy baby blanket. Though it may seem complicated at first glance, the Linen stitch is surprisingly simple and easy to master.  This charming stitch creates a beautifully striped fabric, resembling a miniature version of the classic granny stripe pattern.

Before we begin our stripy journey, let's familiarize ourselves with the essential stitches for this baby blanket -

  • Single Crochet: Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops
  • Chain Stitch: To make a chain stitch, yarn over and pull through the loop on the hook, this is repeated as many times as is necessary
  • Slip Stitch:  Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. pull this loop through the loop on the hook

About the Yarn

Drops Paris is a wonderfully versatile Aran weight yarn, spun from multiple strands of 100% natural, non-mercerised cotton, resulting in a soft and supple matte fabric that feels sublime. This breathable and highly absorbent yarn is perfect for creating spring and summer baby blankets.  Drops Paris comes in 50g balls in many appealing colours.  Each ball is 75 metres (82 yards).

You can purchase the yarn here at The Wool Warehouse.  I often buy yarn from here and can thoroughly recommend them.  I am not affiliated with them in any way.

Alternative Yarn Options

If you can’t get hold of Drops Yarn, I recommend Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran from Lovecrafts Yarns, in shades Paper White, Bubblegum Pink, Marine Blue, Buttercup Yellow, Lime Green, Vintage Pink, Dusty Lilac and Soft Fudge.  This is also another of my favourite places to buy yarn, (affiliate link).
