How To Crochet a Wattle Stitch Baby Blanket - Easy Beginner Free Pattern

Hello yarn lovers!  I recently noticed that the yarn I used for this crochet baby blanket, had been discontinued.  It's a real shame, as the mix of cotton and acrylic made such a beautiful squishy yarn.  So, I thought it was time that this pattern had an update.  

I made the blanket again with new yarn and also added more sizes and other helpful information too.  Keep reading and learn how to crochet a Wattle Stitch baby blanket.  I hope you like the new version...

This pattern is crocheted entirely in Wattle Stitch.  I love the texture and it is so quick and easy to make.  A beginner crocheter can easily follow this pattern and if these colours aren't your cup of tea, it would look great in so many other colour combinations.  Just pick 3 colours you love for a colour block effect or you could even use a self striping or cake yarn.  

Now this pattern was originally designed as a baby blanket and the previous one was gifted to my brother's son when he was a baby, but what if you don't want or need a baby blanket?  Well I got you covered!  This crochet pattern now comes in 6 sizes including a throw and twin bed size.  Need a custom size?  We have that covered too!

About the yarn 

Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran is a 100% acrylic yarn and comes in a huge range of gorgeous colours.  The yarn is machine washable and comes in 100g balls.  Each ball has approximately 201 yards.

If you would like to make this in cotton yarn I recommend PaintboxYarns Cotton Aran in shades Paper White, Washed Teal and Elephant Grey. 

If you fancy making this in wool, I recommend Cascade Yarns220 Superwash Merino in shades Summer Sky Heather, Tuffet and White

Materials

Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran in colours Paper White, Taupe & Washed Teal

Darning needle

Scissors

5.5mm (I) hook

Difficulty

Gauge

18sts 12rows = 4in. in Wattle st with Paintbox Simply Aran (gauge is not essential for this project, however if you do not meet gauge, yarn quantities may not be accurate).

Abbreviations US terms (UK conversion)

Sc – single crochet (double crochet)

Dc – double crochet (treble crochet)

Hdc – half double crochet (half treble crochet)

Ch – chain

Sl st – slip stitch

St(s) – stitch(es)

Sp – space

Sk - skip

Pattern Notes

• Read pattern in its entirety before starting
• US terms used throughout
• The stitch in this pattern is called Wattle Stitch
• The yarn used is Aran weight this is roughly the equivalent of Worsted
• Change colour by pulling new colour through last st of row
• Crochet colours in order, Washed Teal, Paper White & Taupe
• For custom sizes chain a multiple of 3

Start Crocheting Here...

With Washed Teal ch required number for size

Row 1 sc in 3^rd ch from hook, ch1, dc in same st, *Sk2 ch, [sc, ch1, dc] in next ch* repeat from *to* until last 3 chs, sk2 chs, hdc in last ch.  Turn.

Row 2 Ch1, *[sc, ch1, dc] in next ch sp* repeat from *to* across, hdc in top ch1 from previous row. Turn.

Repeat row 2 changing colour each time section length is met until all 3 colour sections are complete and blanket is required length.  Fasten off and weave in ends.  Block if required.

Single Crochet Border

While this blanket does not need a border (I didn't add one to mine), if you really feel you want one, or your edges need a little neatening, sc evenly around your blanket, changing colours when necessary to keep colour block effect correct.  How many sts you work will depend on your tension.  If your border makes your edges “wavy” you have too many sts, if your sides are “pulling in” you have too few, adjust accordingly.

Try this…

Along sides 2sc around each hdc post, sc in side of each turning ch, sc in each st across top, sc in each st across bottom, 1sc in each corner.
