Why You’ll Love This Chicken Crochet Pattern

There are a few reasons this crochet chicken pattern is such a favourite:

  • Simple construction:  This design is made by joining just two daisy granny squares together, so it’s simple and fun.
  • A really fun shape:  With a bit of folding and sewing, those flat squares turn into a plump little chicken. It’s one of those projects that feels a bit magical when it comes together.
  • Perfect for spring and Easter:  These crochet granny square chickens make lovely seasonal décor, especially for Easter, but they’re cute enough to keep out all year.
  • Easy to customise:  You can change the body colours to make a whole flock of crochet chickens in different shades. Great for using up yarn from your stash too.

Important: These are intended as decorative items only and are not suitable for use as toys.  You could add a lining to the back of each granny square before joining and embroider the eyes to make them child friendly.

Make Dumpling Chickens with Any Granny Square

One of the fun things about this pattern is that you’re not limited to the daisy granny square! You can experiment with any granny square you like to create your Dumpling Chickens. Mix and match colours, textures, or even try one of your own favourite square patterns to give each chicken a unique look.

About the Yarn

For this crochet chicken pattern , I used Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran , which is a 100% cotton yarn. It works really well for this kind of project because:

  • Great stitch definition:  The texture of the daisy petals really stands out with this yarn.
  • Lovely colour choices:  I used Antique Gold for the beak and daisy centre, Off White for the petals, and Misty Green, Canary Yellow, and Pale Lilac for the chicken bodies.

You can find out more about this yarn in our full yarn review.

If you don’t have this yarn, you can easily swap it for another aran/worsted weight cotton like
