Super Simple Slip Stitch Edging (That Little Braided Look!)

Hello yarn lovers! Today I’m sharing a really easy and super quick edging that you can add to pretty much any crochet project. It’s all made with slip stitches and a little chain, and it gives your work this lovely braided-looking finish. It looks really pretty and totally effortless.

I’ve popped the video tutorial below so you can watch along, and the written instructions are just underneath.

Why I Love This Kind of Edging

You know me, I love anything simple that still looks lovely, and this edging is exactly that. It doesn’t bulk up the edge of your work, it sits really flat, and it works on everything from granny squares to blankets to wearables.

In the video I’m demonstrating it on a granny square using DK yarn and a 4 mm hook, but just use whatever yarn and hook match your own project.

What You’ll Need

  • The yarn you used for your project

  • A matching hook

  • Scissors

  • Needle for weaving in ends

Slip Stitch Edging Video Tutorial

In this video I show you exactly how to work this edging using just slip stitches and chains. You’ll see how to work neatly around the corners, and how to get that pretty braided texture all the way around your project. It’s a short, easy follow-along video that’s perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to learn this simple stitch.

How to Work the Slip Stitch Edging

Starting Off

Begin with a slip knot on your hook. Join to your project with a slip stitch anywhere along the edge. It really doesn’t matter where you start.

The Simple Repeat

Now you just follow this easy little pattern:

  • Chain 1

  • Slip stitch into the next stitch

  • Chain 1

  • Slip stitch into the next stitch

And that’s it. Keep going all the way along the side. The chain stitches create that little braided look sitting along the top edge.

Working the Corners

When you reach a corner, don’t go into the corner space like you would normally do on a granny square. Instead, go straight into the actual chain stitches that form the corner. They can feel a tiny bit fiddly, but just ease your hook in and keep going.

Slip stitch, chain 1, and carry on around.

Finishing Up

Once you get back to the beginning, slip stitch into your first stitch to close the round. Fasten off, weave in your ends, and your edging is done.

It’s such a lovely, simple finish and perfect when you want something neat that doesn’t take ages to hook up.
