There’s something so satisfying about crocheting a simple dishcloth. They are so quick and easy to make and you are left with something beautiful and useful.  The Budding Acorns Dishcloth is an easy fall crochet dishcloth pattern using the bud stitch, and it’s perfect for using up scraps of cotton yarn in all your favourite autumn shades. I love how the bud stitch gives such lovely texture while still being simple enough for beginners to master.

What Makes This Stitch Special

If you’ve never tried the bud stitch before, you’re in for a treat. It creates a soft, raised texture that works up beautifully – perfect for this seasonal project. The stitch adds enough interest to keep things fun without being fiddly or complicated. You can find more stitch tutorials like this in my Crochet Stitch Library, including the granny stitch, linen stitch, and blanket stitch tutorials among others.

What Inspired This Design

I was inspired by the cosy colours of autumn leaves – muted browns and pinks. I wanted to create something practical for the home that still had that cosy, handmade feel. The result is a textured, beautiful dishcloth that looks just as pretty hanging in the kitchen as it does in a gift basket.

Choosing Your Colour Palette

For this bud stitch dishcloth pattern, I picked shades that reminded me of autumn.  We have a park just outside our window with oak and horse chestnut trees.  The ground is littered with acorns and conkers at this time of year.

If you want a fall pallet for your dishcloths, think pumpkin orange, chestnut brown, and soft cream. Of course, you can choose any colours you like — a mix of warm tones always feels so comforting this time of year.

Is It Beginner Friendly?

Yes! If you can crochet single and double crochet stitches, you can make this dishcloth. The bud stitch is surprisingly straightforward and this makes it a great project for anyone wanting to try a new stitch without taking on a big pattern.

What You’ll Need

You won’t need anything fancy for this project, you can find all the tools you’ll need on Amazon or at most craft stores if you don't already have these in your kit.

About the Yarn

For the Budding Acorns Dishcloth, I used Drops Paris Aran, a lovely 100% cotton yarn that’s soft, durable, and perfect for home projects. The smooth texture really helps the bud stitch stand out, and it comes in lots of gorgeous colours to suit any season.

Yarns I Recommend:

  • Drops Paris Aran – 100% cotton, 50g (75m / 82yds), Aran weight, 5mm hook; soft and sturdy with great stitch definition.

  • Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran – 100% cotton, 50g (85m / 93yds), Aran weight, 4.5–5mm hook; smooth texture, easy to work with, and available in a huge range of colours.

  • KnitPicks Dishie (Worsted) – 100% cotton, 100g (190m). A hard-wearing cotton yarn designed especially for dishcloths and home projects — it’s sturdy, holds up beautifully to washing, and still feels soft in your hands.

Finishing Touches

You can block your finished dishcloths if you wish.  I don't usual block washcloths if I am planning on using them myself, but when giving as gifts it's nice to have a more professional finish.  You can also get the featured gift labels here.
