Why I Love This Project

I love anything with granny squares, they are the perfect portable project. With this design, you can use the same yarns we did or rummage through your stash. Whatever you choose, you will end up with a super cute granny square hat to keep you cosy all winter long.

Or, if you don’t want to wait for each pattern in the crochet-along to be released, you can get the Elements Accessories ebook instead. The ebook includes all four matching patterns – glovesbeaniecowl, and bandana – all in one place and at a lower price than purchasing all 4 individual patterns.

What Makes This Beanie Special

This design takes the granny square and transforms it into a wearable accessory. I always love anything granny stitch, it's such a relaxing make and the beanie works up quickly. The hat was designed to have that slouchy look but you can work less rows at the crown for a more fitted beanie if you like.  Finishing with a faux fur pom pom adds extra cuteness.

About the Yarn

The Granny Square Beanie is inspired by the changing seasons and the Stylecraft Elements yarn. It's the perfect thing to keep cosy while braving the elements...

For this project, I used:

  • Stylecraft Batik Elements Swirl DK – a soft wool blend yarn with gentle tonal transitions, almost like watching the sky change with the weather. Each ball has natural shifts in colour that make every granny square unique.

  • Stylecraft Bellissima DK or King Cole Cherished DK – smooth, solid acrylic yarns with a soft feel and excellent stitch definition. They’re interchangeable and make the perfect neutral companion to the swirling tones of the Elements yarn.

Together, these yarns create contrast and balance, making the granny squares stand out beautifully while still feeling soft and comfortable to wear.

Beginner-Friendly?

Yes! If you can crochet a granny square, you can make this beanie. The video tutorial is included to guide you through every step. I know it can be easier to learn visually, so the video shows you how to make the squares, join them neatly, work the ribbing, and shape the crown. Even if this is your first hat, you’ll feel confident following along.

What You’ll Need

Video Tutorial

Alongside the written pattern, there’s a full video tutorial. This is great if you prefer to watch the steps in action or if you get stuck at any point. Sometimes seeing the stitches being worked makes all the difference, especially when joining granny squares or working the crown shaping.

Sizing & Yarn Quantities

The size chart in this pattern shows the finished circumference of each hat size. The design includes 1 inch (2.5 cm) of negative ease, meaning the hat will be slightly smaller than your actual head measurement so it stretches to fit comfortably.

How to choose your size:

  • Measure around the fullest part of your head (just above your eyebrows and ears).
  • Choose the size with a finished measurement about 1 inch (2.5 cm) smaller than your actual head measurement. This ensures a snug, comfortable fit without being too tight.

Granny Square (make 4)

Sizes L adult start using a 4.50 mm hook & S adult with a 4.00 mm hook.  With cc
Round 1 Ch4 and join to form ring. Ch3, 2dc into ring, [ch2, 3dc into ring] 3 times, ch2, join with sl st to top ch3, sl st in next 2 sts, changing colour by finishing last sl st with new colour, sl st in corner sp.

Carry old yarn up to next row height as follows: ch1, lay old yarn over hook, ch2.

Round 2 [Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc] in same sp, in next and every sp [3dc, ch2, 3dc], join with sl st to top ch3, sl st in next 2 sts, changing colour by finishing last sl st with new colour, sl st in corner sp.

Round 3 [Ch3, 2dc in same sp, ch2, 3dc in same sp], 3dc in each sp across sides, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in each corner sp, join with sl st to top ch3, sl st in next 2 sts, changing colour by finishing last sl st with new colour, sl st in corner sp.

Repeat round 3 for both sizes 3 times.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking
We recommend blocking squares before joining.

Joining Squares
Sew squares together using mattress stitch or your preferred method to form a tube.

Ribbing
Size L adult using a 4.00 mm hook & S adult with a 3.50 mm hook
Row 1 With right side facing and mc, attach yarn at any seam, ch9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sl st in next 2 sts along bottom of granny square, turn.

Row 2 Sk both sl sts, sc in each st working in blo, in last st work through both loops, turn. Note: no turning chain is used here, instead very slightly elongate the loop on hook.

Row 3 Sc in next st, sc in all remaining sts working in blo, sl st in next 2 sts along bottom of granny square, turn.

Repeat row 2 & 3 until you have worked around the entire hat. Do not fasten off. Turning work inside out, sl st both edges together to join working in blo of sc sts and foundation edge, fasten off.

Crown
Sizes L adult using a 4.50 mm hook & S adult a 4.00 mm hook.

Round 1 With right side facing and mc, attach yarn in right corner sp where squares are joined together, ch3, dc2tog over this and next sp, dc in same sp, [3dc] in each sp around, except where squares join here work [dc, dc2tog over both sps, dc], sl st to top ch3, sl st in next 2 sts and next sp.

Round 2 Ch3, 2dc in same sp, [3dc] in each sp around, join to top ch3, sl st in next 2 sts and in next sp.

Repeat round 2 6 times.

This makes a slouchie style hat, reduce these rounds for a more fitted beanie. We advise trying on for size to see how many rounds you require.

Decreases
Round 1 Ch3, dc2tog over this and next sp, dc in same sp, [dc in next sp, dc2tog over this and next sp, dc in same sp] repeat around, join with sl st to top ch3.

Repeat round 1 once more (sl st in next 2 sts and into next sp first). Fasten off leaving a long tail.

To close the crown of your hat, thread a darning needle with the yarn tail and weave it through the front loops only of each stitch around twice. Pull the yarn firmly to close the opening, then secure and weave in the end.

Add a Pom Pom (Optional)
To attach a removable faux fur pom pom, sew a button securely to the inside top of the hat. Using a crochet hook, pull the pom pom’s elastic loop through the top centre of the hat, then stretch the loop over the button. This allows the pom pom to be easily removed before washing.

  1. This is adorable, Catherine! And your colors are perfect. I love your use of Batik Elements (especially this color with the winter white). I've not purchased any of this yet, but now I see I need to.

    1. Thanks Becki, I had originally intended both the boot cuffs and gloves to be with cream, but the Batik "cream" actually turned out to be an oatmealy beige colour. I much prefer the Winter White. I might make the gloves again using it...
