How to Crochet a Granny Stitch Baby Blanket

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I have a soft spot for anything granny stitch. There’s something so comforting about the rhythm of the stitches and the way the colours come together.

The Happy Go Granny Baby Blanket has to be one of my absolute favourites to make, not just because of the beautiful granny stitch but because it’s such a versatile pattern. Whether you’re making a small car seat blanket or going all the way up to a twin-sized throw, it’s the kind of project that’s perfect for all skill levels, and it’s just so fun to work on!

What’s So Special About the Granny Stitch?

Granny stitch is like an old friend. It’s simple but incredibly satisfying, and once you get into the flow, it’s hard to stop. I love how the granny stripes create such a beautiful texture and visual interest, making the blanket look stunning and giving endless colour possibilities.

When you’re learning how to crochet a granny stitch blanket, it feels like the design is almost creating itself! For me, it’s the perfect combination of nostalgia and modern style. And let’s not forget how much fun it is to play with colours, whether you’re going for a rainbow of shades or keeping it simple and elegant.

What Inspired the Happy Go Granny Baby Blanket?

I’ve always been drawn to patterns that have that vintage, timeless feel, and the granny stitch is exactly that. It reminds me of all the cosy, handmade items that have been passed down through generations. When I was designing this blanket, I wanted to create something that could fit into any room and be loved for years to come—whether you’re using it for a nursery or as a throw for your sofa. It’s versatile, it’s cheerful, and it’s one of those blankets that you can’t help but smile at every time you see it.

Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Blanket

One of the things I love most about the Happy Go Granny Baby Blanket is how flexible it is when it comes to yarn. You can really make it your own! For my version, I used Paint Box Yarns Simply Aran which is a soft, machine-washable yarn that will hold up beautifully through wash after wash. You can choose any yarn you love, from cotton to acrylic or even wool. Just remember that the yarn you pick will really influence the texture and overall feel of the blanket. It’s important to find something that’s both soft and durable, especially since this blanket is meant to last.

Selecting the Perfect Crochet Hooks

For this tutorial, I used a 6mm hook. I love to use these Clover Soft Touch hooks as they have a smooth surface that glides through the yarn easily and the handles are comfortable to hold.  These are my preferred hooks to use and I have them in many sizes.

Handy Tools and Notions

Additionally, you'll need some helpful items like a pair of scissors, a measuring tape or gauge ruler, and a darning needle for neatly securing loose yarn ends. While not essential, stitch markers can be quite convenient for keeping track of your stitches.

Exploring the Granny Stripe Blanket Pattern

If you’re new to granny stitch, don’t worry—this pattern is perfect for beginners. Once you learn how to crochet a granny stitch baby blanket (or a full-sized blanket!), you’ll be hooked. The granny stripe is created by working into chain spaces, which gives the blanket a beautiful texture. Plus, the repeating nature of the stitches makes it super easy to pick up, put down, and work on at your own pace.

Finishing Your Happy Go Granny Baby Blanket

Once you’ve completed your blanket, the final step is to weave in any loose ends and block it to give it a nice, polished look. Blocking will help even out the stitches and ensure the blanket lays flat.
