How to Crochet a Granny Stitch Christmas Stocking
Highland Tweed Stockings
The holiday season is here, and if you're looking for a festive gift or a fun project to make stockings for your kids, my Granny Stitch Christmas Stocking is just the thing! This stocking is super easy to make, works up fast, and is a fantastic stashbuster project. You can use as many colours as you like or keep it classic with traditional colours like mine.
A Trip Down Memory Lane
This Granny Stitch Stocking holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the very first patterns I shared on my blog, along with truly terrible photos and questionable colour choices. But I still remember the excitement of posting it, hoping that someone, somewhere, would find joy in creating something from my design.
Fast forward to today, and I’m thrilled to bring you a refreshed version of this classic pattern, complete with a video tutorial and new, (hopefully better) photos to inspire your creativity.
As my first blog posts hold such sentimental value, I’ve included the original blog post at the end for nostalgia's sake. It’s a little piece of my journey, a reminder of how far I have come.
Materials
I have curated a selection of crochet and crafting materials that I regularly use, in my Amazon Store. As an Amazon affiliate I may receive commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. You will find all the extras you need to make your stockings here.
Materials Needed:
- Stylecraft Life Double Knit yarn (or your choice of DK weight yarn)
- 4mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Watch the Video Tutorial
To make things even easier, I’ve created a step-by-step video tutorial to guide you through each part of the process. You can follow along and see exactly how each stitch and step is done. Check out the video here.
Instructions:
Step 1: Start the Toe
- Begin with a slip knot on your hook and chain four.
- Join to the first stitch to form a ring.
- Chain three (this counts as your first double crochet).
- Work a total of 15 double crochets into the ring (including the chain three).
- Join to the top of the chain three.
Step 2: Increase Rounds
- Round 2: Chain three (counts as first double crochet), then work another double crochet into the same stitch. Continue with two double crochets in each stitch around (30 stitches). Join to the top of the chain three.
- Round 3: Chain three, then double crochet into the same stitch. Alternate between one double crochet in the next stitch and two double crochets in the following stitch (45 stitches). Join to the top of the chain three.
- Round 4: Chain three, then double crochet into the same stitch, then one double crochet into each of the next two stitches. Repeat around (60 stitches). Join to the top of the chain three.
Step 3: Build the Toe
- Chain three, then double crochet into each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain three.
- Repeat this round twice more.
Step 4: Build The Foot
- Attach your new colour with a slip stitch.
- Start with a stacked single crochet (work a single crochet, then another single crochet in the front leg).
- Work two double crochets into the same stitch (first granny cluster).
- Skip two stitches and work another granny cluster into the next stitch.
- Continue this pattern (skip two stitches, work a granny cluster) around. Turn.
Step 5: Continue the Granny Stitch Pattern
- Start with a stacked stitch in the first space, then work two double crochets into the same space.
- Work a granny cluster into each space around.
- Alternate your colours as desired. If you're using more than two colours, fasten off after each round.
- Work a total of 14 rounds in the granny stitch pattern. Fasten off.
Step 6: Shape the Heel
- Work 24 double crochets across the back of the stocking.
- Turn, work a stacked stitch, then double crochet into the next nine stitches.
- Double crochet two together twice, then double crochet into the next ten stitches.
- Continue shaping the heel by decreasing stitches in each row as follows:
- 9 stitches, double 2 together twice, 9 stitches
- 8 stitches, double 2 together twice, 8 stitches
- 7 stitches, double 2 together twice, 7 stitches
- 6 stitches, double 2 together twice, 6 stitches
- Fold the heel in half and join with a slip stitch.
Step 7: Continue the Leg
- Work a granny cluster in the hole created by joining the heel.
- Now work down the side of the heel, skip a row then work a granny cluster around the post of the last stitch of the next row, repeat across the side of the heel
- Now work across the top of the stocking with a granny cluster in each space until you get back to the heel.
- Work up the side of the heel in the same way as before, joining to first granny cluster
- Continue with 19 more rounds of granny stitch
Step 8: Add the Ribbing
- Attach your yarn at the back seam and chain 41.
- Work single crochets into each chain (40 stitches).
- Slip stitch into the next two stitches on the stocking.
- Turn, skip the slip stitches, and work single crochets in the back loops only, until the last stitch work through both loops and turn.
- Do not chain instead slightly elongate the loop on the hook and single crochet through both loops for the first stitch, then continue with single crochet in the back loops of each stitch.
- Slip stitch into the next two stitches on the stocking.
- Repeat this pattern, attaching the ribbing to the stocking as you go.
- Join the ribbing ends together with slip stitches through the front loops.
Step 9: Finishing Touches
- Whip stitch the remaining gap, in the heel.
- Weave in all ends.
Optional Extras:
- Tassels: Add tassels to your stocking for a professional touch.
- Name Tags: Attach wooden name tags to personalise your stocking
- Add leather hanging tags.
I hope you enjoy making this Granny Stitch Stocking as much as I did. It's a wonderful project for the festive season and makes a great handmade gift. Happy crocheting! If you want to see more tutorials, check out my YouTube channel for more crochet inspiration.

Round 22 work a granny cluster into the space you just made with your slip stitch. Working along the side of your heel rows [skip one dc, then work a dc cluster into the side of the next dc] x3. Work a granny cluster into the side of the first dc on the heel, [skip 1 dc, granny cluster into the next dc] x2, slip stitch to join.

Hanging loop...

Fold in half and sew onto the top of your stocking.
This is adorable! Thank you so much for writing out the pattern and offering it on your blog. I can't wait to make one!
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect for a friend of mine! Question, though: how big is the finished project, approximately? I know it will vary depending on yarn & tension, but following your pattern to the letter, what's the average length? Thanks for the pattern, and thanks in advance for taking the time to read my question! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to comment, the stocking is around 17-18 inches long when made in DK yarn.
ReplyDeletePerfect! Thank you! :)
