Step-by-Step Instructions:
Starting the Tree:
Begin by putting a slip knot on your hook and chaining 15.
Row 1:
- Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in the next five stitches, making a total of six single crochets.
- Next, work a decrease stitch (single crochet two stitches together). Insert your hook into the first chain, pull up a loop, then into the second chain, pull up another loop, yarn over, and pull through all loops on the hook.
- Finish this row with six more single crochets.
Row 2:
- Chain one and turn. From now on, we’ll be working into the back loops only.
- Single crochet in the next five stitches through the back loop, then decrease, and single crochet in the remaining six stitches.
- Chain one and turn.
Row 3:
- Single crochet five, decrease, and single crochet in the remaining five stitches.
- Chain one and turn.
Continuing the Pattern:
- Each row will reduce the number of stitches by 1, continue in the same manner until you get to row 11
Finishing the Tree:
- For Row 11, chain one, turn, single crochet in the first stitch, decrease, and single crochet in the last stitch.
- Chain one, turn, single crochet one, decrease, and chain one and turn.
- Finally, decrease in the last two stitches and fasten off.
Embellishing Your Gift Tags:
Now for the fun part – embellishments! Here’s how I did mine:
- Twine: Use a darning needle to thread twine through the top of the tree and tie it to the gift tag.
- Stamping: I stamped the back of my tags with rubber stamps, but you can also write on them if you prefer.
- Buttons: I added tiny buttons with hot glue and a larger brown button for the trunk, tying it on with twine.
- Stars and Owls: I also used a cute little star and an owl button for extra charm.

I love how these turned out, and they’re a big hit on my presents. If you’re looking for materials, I’ve linked everything in my Amazon store. Purchasing through my links helps support my channel as I get a small commission.
