Bramble Patch Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern (Chunky & Beginner Friendly)
Looking for an easy chunky crochet baby blanket pattern that works up quickly and looks beautiful? The Bramble Patch Baby Blanket is a cosy, beginner-friendly design made with soft self-striping yarn and simple half double crochet stitches.
This blanket is warm, squishy, and perfect for gifts, baby showers, or everyday snuggles. And because it’s worked in chunky yarn, it grows really fast — which we all love.
If you’ve been searching for a simple crochet baby blanket pattern using chunky yarn, this might be exactly what you need.
Why I Love This Chunky Crochet Baby Blanket
You know I love making baby blankets. They’re practical, thoughtful, and always appreciated.
But what makes this one especially satisfying is how quickly it comes together. Chunky yarn and a 7 mm hook mean you see progress straight away. It’s the kind of relaxing project you can work on in the evening without overthinking every stitch.
And because the yarn changes colour naturally, there’s no complicated colour work or constant ends to weave in.

What Makes the Bramble Patch Blanket Special
This is a true beginner crochet baby blanket pattern . It’s worked entirely in half double crochet, creating a soft, squishy fabric that’s perfect for babies or a sofa throw. The texture is simple but cosy, and the stitch definition looks beautiful in chunky yarn.
The magic really comes from the yarn choice. The soft colour transitions create depth and interest without you needing to change yarns manually.
It looks really pretty — but is so simple to make.

Choosing Your Colour Palette
For my sample, I used:
Wildberry blends rich berry tones with softer teal shades, creating a natural hedgerow-inspired look as you crochet. The Hedgerow Chunky comes in many more beautiful shades, giving you plenty of options to choose from.

Is This Crochet Baby Blanket Beginner Friendly?
Yes — absolutely.
If you can chain and work half double crochet, you can make this blanket.
There’s no shaping, no complex stitch combinations, and no colour changes to manage within rows. The chunky yarn also makes it easier to see your stitches, which is ideal if you’re still building confidence.
This makes it a perfect first crochet baby blanket pattern .

Yarn Details
The main yarn used is King Cole Hedgerow Chunky.
It’s a 100% acrylic chunky yarn with 304 metres (332 yards) per 200g ball. It’s soft, machine washable, and perfect for baby blankets.
The border is worked in Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky in Champagne White, but any cream chunky yarn will work.
Yarn Substitutes
If you’d like alternatives, you could try:
Always check total yardage when substituting yarn to ensure you have enough for your chosen blanket size.
Blanket Sizes
This chunky crochet baby blanket pattern includes six sizes:
Yarn quantities are based on King Cole Hedgerow Chunky for the main colour and Paintbox Simply Chunky for the border and are approximate.
If you substitute yarn, calculate using total yardage rather than ball count.

- Read pattern carefully all the way through before starting.
