King Cole Hedgerow Chunky Yarn Review

two balls of chunky self striping yarn in berry colours

I recently bought a few balls of King Cole Hedgerow Chunky, and I was really curious to see how the colour changes would work up. It’s described as being inspired by countryside hedgerows, and that really comes through in the shades.

The colours move gently from one tone to the next, with a slightly marled look running through parts of the strand. It’s not a bold, high-contrast striping yarn — the transitions are softer and more blended, which crochets up really prettily.

Colour Options & Inspiration

Hedgerow Chunky is inspired by the colours you’d see along British hedgerows and countryside walks — soft florals, berry tones, leafy greens and earthy neutrals.

Each shade is self-striping, but the colours don’t change in harsh blocks. Instead, the slight marbling enables the colours to flow gradually. Even very simple stitches look beautiful and the yarn does all the work for you.

It’s ideal if you like letting the yarn create the visual interest rather than relying on complicated stitch patterns.

How It Feels to Work With

As a chunky yarn, it’s comfortable to hold and easy to see your stitches, which makes it especially good for beginners.

Chunky yarn:

  • Is easier to grip and control.

  • Makes stitches clearer and easier to identify.

  • Works up quickly, so you see progress faster.

  • Is more forgiving if your tension isn’t perfect yet.

Hedgerow Chunky doesn’t split easily and glides nicely on the hook. It feels soft without being fluffy, so your stitch definition still shows.

The recommended hook size is 6mm, which gives a nicely structured chunky fabric. For my project, I chose to use a 7mm hook because I wanted a slightly looser fabric with better drape. Sizing up gave the finished piece a softer, more flexible feel while still keeping the stitches defined.

If you prefer a denser fabric, stick with 6mm. If you like more movement and drape, a 7mm works really well.

What It’s Best Suited For

Because it’s 100% acrylic and machine washable, this yarn is practical as well as attractive. It works beautifully for:

The self-striping effect means you don’t need to faf around with change colours to get a lovely finish, which makes it especially good for beginners or those that love simple TV crochet.

I actually have a brand new baby blanket pattern coming out soon using this yarn, designed especially for absolute beginners.
