Sunflower Granny Squares - Learn how to crochet them in this tutorial by Lullaby Lodge...

Hello friends, autumn is upon us, the air is crisp in the morning, the days are still warm with a last hint of summer and the leaves are starting to turn golden and fall off the trees.  What better way to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall with this gorgeous, sunny, sunflower, granny square.

Sunflower Granny Square

Materials

Yarn
Darning needle

Hook

Use a hook recommended on your yarn ball band

Abbreviations US Terms (UK Conversion)

dc - double crochet (treble crochet)
sc - single crochet (double crochet)
tr - treble crochet (double treble crochet)
hdc - half double crochet (half treble crochet)
ch - chain
st(s) - stitch(es)
sp(s) - space(s)
sl st - slip stitch
cl - cluster
bcl - beginning cluster
ps - puff stitch
yo - yarn over
sk - skip

Special Stitches

Beginning cluster: ch2, [Yo, insert hook into st and pull up a loop, yo pull through 2 loops] x3, yo pull through all loops, ch1 to lock in place.

Cluster: [Yo, insert hook into st and pull up a loop, yo pull through 2 loops] x4, yo pull through all loops, ch1 to lock in place.

Puff stitch: [Yo, insert hook into st and pull up a long loop] x4, yo pull through all loops, ch1 to secure puff.

Other notes:  US terms throughout.  I used aran / worsted cotton yarn to make my squares with a 5mm (H) hook.  This creates a square that measures approximately 6 inches.  You can of course make your squares using any yarn, just use the hook size recommended on your yarn ball band, (this may change the size of your square).  When starting the first ps, pull up a loop to the height of the st, this looks more seamless than chaining 2 to start.

These sunflowers would also make great coasters.  Simply omit round 6 and instead work 3sc in each ch sp around.

I really enjoyed designing this square and I think a blanket made with these squares would look fabulous.  What would you make with yours?  Let me know in the comments below...

I used this motif for the basis of a beautiful granny square scarf, you can find the video tutorial here...
