The "Diane Rachael" granny square, a tutorial by Lullaby Lodge...

Hello friends, I have a really special pattern to share with you today, this pretty granny square.  Sadly a year ago we buried my sister Diane.  She suffered for many years from Multiple Sclerosis, a truly terrible disease.  I wanted to make something in her honour and so the Diane Rachael Square was born.  

My sister loved the colour yellow and even had her husband paint her room in yellow so it would cheer her up.  She also loved flowers particularly daffodils, so the square just had to be of a flower design in yellow yarn...

Materials

Yarn
Darning needle

Hook

Use a hook recommended on your yarn ball band

Abbreviations US Terms (UK Conversion)

dc - double crochet (treble crochet)
sc - single crochet (double crochet)
hdc - half double crochet (half treble crochet)
ch - chain
st(s) - stitch(es)
sp(s) - space(s)
sl st - slip stitch
cl - cluster
bcl - beginning cluster
yo - yarn over
sk - skip

Special Stitches

Beginning cluster: ch2, [Yo, insert hook into st and pull up a loop, yo pull through 2 loops] x3, yo pull through all loops, ch1 to lock in place.

Cluster: [Yo, insert hook into st and pull up a loop, yo pull through 2 loops] x4, yo pull through all loops, ch1 to lock in place.

Other notes: US terms used throughout.  I made my square with Scheepjes Cahlista Aran in Lemonade, with a 4.5mm hook and my finished square measured approximately 6 inches.

Ch4 and join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1 Ch1 (does not count as st), 8sc into ring, join with sl st to 1st sc.  (8sc)


Round 2 Bcl in next st, ch2, [cl in next st, ch2] in each st, join with sl st to top bcl.  (8cl)


Round 3 Sl st to next sp, bcl, ch2, cl in same sp, [cl, ch2, cl, ch2] in each sp around, join with sl st to top bcl.  (16cl)


Round 4 Sl st across to 2nd sp, ch1, [sc, ch5, sc] in same sp (corner loop made), *ch2, sc in next sp, ch5, sk a sp, sc in next sp, ch2, [sc, ch5, sc] in next sp* repeat from *to* twice, ch2, sc in next sp, ch5 sk a sp, sc in next sp, ch2, sl st to sc.  (4 corner loops, 8 ch2 sps, 4 ch5 sps) 


Round 5 Sl st into corner loop, [bcl, ch2, cl, ch2] in same sp, 2dc in each ch2 sp, 7hdc in each ch5 sp, [ch2, cl, ch2, cl, ch2] in each corner loop, join with sl st to top bcl.  (16dc, 28hdc, 8cl, 8 ch2 sps)


Round 6 Sl st into corner sp, [bcl, ch2, cl, ch2] in same sp, dc in next and each ch2 sp, dc in every st, [ch2, cl, ch2, cl, ch2] in each corner sp, join with sl st to top bcl.  (52dc, 8cl, 8 ch2 sps)


If you would like a bigger square you may repeat round 6 until desired size...

Round 7 Sl st to corner sp, [ch1, sc, ch2, sc] in same sp, sc in top of each cl, 2sc in each ch2 sp, sc in every dc, [sc, ch2, sc] in each corner, join with sl st to sc.  Fasten off and weave in ends.


I plan to design a new baby blanket using this square, so make sure to check back often...
