Best Summer Crochet Patterns You'll Want to Make Right Now
Surviving the Heatwave (with Crochet!)
Is anyone else melting right now? I don’t know about you, but this current heatwave has me craving iced drinks, shade, and lightweight yarns. When it’s this hot, I still want to crochet, just without being buried under a heavy blanket or using yarn that sticks to my fingers. That’s why I love to switch to cotton yarn and other lightweight fibres in summer.
If you’re wondering what to make (or what yarns to try), I’ve got you covered. In this post, I’ll share some of my favourite yarns for summer crochet and round up a bunch of lightweight crochet patterns that are perfect for warm weather.
Why I Love Cotton Yarn (Especially in Summer)
Cotton is hands-down my go-to yarn during the hottest days. It’s breathable, soft, and doesn’t make your hands feel sweaty while working with it. Whether I’m making a top, a bag, or even a baby blanket, cotton yarn just feels like summer.
I also really love cotton blends, cotton-linen, cotton-acrylic, and even bamboo-cotton yarns. These blends are often lighter or have better drape, and they still feel lovely and cool when it’s warm outside.
Here’s what I love most about using cotton and cotton blends in summer projects:
They’re breathable and lightweight
They have excellent stitch definition
They’re great for sensitive skin (especially baby makes)
They hold their shape really well
They're machine washable

Understanding Yarn Fibres for Summer Crochet
Choosing the right yarn fibre can make a big difference in how comfortable and wearable your summer crochet projects are. Here’s a quick guide to some of the best fibres to use when it’s warm outside:
Cotton: Cotton is the classic summer yarn. It’s breathable, absorbent, and soft against the skin. Because it doesn’t trap heat, cotton garments and accessories stay cool and comfortable to wear. It also has great stitch definition, which makes your crochet patterns pop. Some cotton yarns can be a splitty so just take care.
Cotton Blends: Blends that combine cotton with fibres like acrylic, bamboo, linen, or silk often have better drape and softness than 100% cotton. For example, cotton-acrylic blends can be lighter and less prone to stretching, while cotton-linen blends add a natural, textured look and extra breathability. These blends are perfect if you want your project to feel light but still hold its shape.
Linen: Linen yarn is made from flax fibres and is prized for its strength and coolness. It has a slightly crisp feel that softens over time with wear and washing. Linen is excellent for summer wearables because it breathes exceptionally well and has a lovely natural sheen.
Bamboo: Bamboo yarn is silky, smooth, and naturally moisture-wicking. It’s a great option if you want something super soft and drapey for summer tops or scarves. Bamboo also has antibacterial properties, which makes it great for warmer weather projects.
Acrylic and Other Synthetics While synthetic fibres like acrylic aren’t as breathable as natural fibres, blends that include acrylic can offer durability, stretch, and easy care. If you choose synthetic or blended yarns for summer, look for ones that are lightweight and soft rather than thick or heavy.
