Learn How to Crochet the Pique Stitch – A Lovely New Stitch to Add to Your Crochet Repertoire

If you’re looking to learn new crochet stitches or want to add something different to your stitch collection, the Pique Stitch is a brilliant one to try. It’s easy to pick up, has a simple one-row repeat, and creates a really neat, look that works beautifully for things like blankets, scarves, and other cosy makes.

In this post, I’ll chat about what makes the Pique Stitch so great, what kinds of projects you can use it for, and what yarn and hooks I used in the video. When you’re ready to have a go, just scroll down and I will show you how to crochet the Pique Stitch.

Why I Love the Pique Stitch

One of the best things about the Pique Stitch is how easy it is. It looks textured and a bit fancy, but it's actually just a clever little combination of stitches worked into the same space. It’s a solid stitch too, which means it doesn’t have big holes—perfect for snuggly projects like:

  • Blankets
  • Scarves
  • Cushions
  • Washcloths

It also has a really satisfying rhythm once you get going, so it’s a nice relaxing one for evening crochet or TV time.

What Makes This Stitch Special?

The Pique Stitch creates these cute little clustered ridges. Each stitch is made up of two parts worked into the same space, giving you a lovely raised texture without being too bulky.

It’s also a one-row repeat, so once you’ve nailed the first row, you’re off! Just repeat the same row again and again until your project is the size you want.

What You’ll Need

Here’s what I used in the video, but feel free to switch things up to suit your own style and stash:

Yarn:

Pebble Haze Double Knit by Yarnsmiths – this yarn gives the stitch great definition without being too heavy.

Crochet Hooks:

7mm hook – for the starting chain

5mm hook – for the rest of the project

You can use any yarn and hook combo you like, just remember to go up a hook size or two for your starting chain so it doesn’t end up too tight. That’s a little trick I always recommend, especially for stitches like this where the tension matters.

ch – chain

st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitch: Pique Stitch

The Pique Stitch is a textured cluster stitch that creates a lovely ridged fabric, perfect for blankets and scarves. Each cluster is worked into the same stitch, combining elements of double crochet and half double crochet for a solid, decorative effect.

  • Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, pull up a loop.

  • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops on the hook.

  • Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all loops on the hook.

  • Repeat in the next stitch to create clusters across your row.

Instructions

Foundation Chain:

  • Make a slip knot.

  • Work 1 Pique st into each ch across the foundation ch.  Turn.
