Yarn and Materials
For this shawl, I used Yarnsmiths FreeSpirit Aran in the shade Apollo. This aran weight yarn is soft, easy to work with, and has subtle colour variations that really show off the texture of the drunken granny stitch. It drapes beautifully and creates a warm but comfortable fabric, making it ideal for a crochet pocket shawl you’ll actually wear.
If you would like to learn more about this yarn you can read my full yarn review here...
Yarnsmiths FreeSpirit Aran comes in 100g balls with 185 metres per ball and is made from 100% acrylic. It’s easy to care for and a great choice for everyday crochet garments and accessories.
If you’re unable to source this yarn, the following yarns make good substitutes and work well for this pattern:
When choosing a substitute, look for an aran or worsted weight yarn with good drape. Slightly tweedy or gently colour-changing yarns work especially well with the drunken granny stitch and help highlight the texture.
You will also need a crochet hook in the size specified in the pattern, a yarn needle, and scissors.
Sizing
- Smaller size: fits S, M, L
- Larger size: fits XL and above
In the size chart, you’ll find the suggested yarn quantities and the finished length and width measurements for each size. These are a useful guide, but we recommend trying on the shawl as you crochet to make sure the length feels right.
A good way to check the length is to drape the shawl over your shoulders: whilst standing your fingertips should just reach the bottom of both ends at the front. This allows a little extra length for the ribbing and ensures the pockets end up in the perfect position for your hands.
Granny's Tipple Pocket Shawl Video Tutorial
There is a full video tutorial available to go with this crochet shawl pattern. The tutorial walks you through the drunken granny stitch step by step and shows how the shawl is worked, including the ribbing and pockets. This is especially helpful if you’re new to the stitch or prefer learning by watching rather than reading.
