Side Saddle Stitch Crochet Tutorial (Easy One Row Repeat)

a swatch of crochet in shades of blue in the side saddle stitch

The Side Saddle Stitch is a beautiful textured crochet stitch that’s easy to learn and simple to memorise. It uses a one row repeat, looks the same on both sides, and creates a soft, eye-catching fabric without being overly complicated.

If you enjoy crochet stitches that look really pretty but are super easy to work up, this one is a great addition to your stitch library.

Why You’ll Love the Side Saddle Stitch

  • One row repeat

  • Easy to memorise

  • Looks the same on the front and back

  • Creates lovely texture without complicated counting

  • Works well with many yarn weights

This stitch is perfect when you want easy mindless crochet.

What to Make With the Side Saddle Stitch

Because this stitch is reversible and flexible, it works well for lots of different crochet projects, including:

It’s especially good for projects where both sides of the fabric will be visible.

Materials & Yarn Information

To crochet the Side Saddle Stitch, you’ll need:

  • Yarn in any weight

  • Crochet hook in the size recommended on your yarn ball band

For the sample shown in the tutorial, I used:

  • DK (double knit) yarn

  • 4.5 mm crochet hook

This stitch adapts really well to different yarns, so feel free to experiment depending on your project.

Pro Tip

Crochet your swatch in cotton yarn to make a beautiful dishcloth.  Simply crochet your swatch to a square size, fasten off, and weave in your ends. You can add a simple single crochet border if you want a neater finish, or just leave it as it is.

This is a great way to practise the stitch, try out cotton yarn, and end up with something practical at the same time.
