Christmas Tree Granny Square Coasters & Bunting Free Crochet Pattern
Granny Tree Coasters & Bunting Crochet Pattern
If you’re looking for a quick and easy Christmas crochet project, these Christmas Tree Granny Square Coasters and Bunting are a perfect festive make. This free crochet pattern uses the same festive granny square design for both projects, featuring a simple Christmas tree motif that’s ideal for seasonal décor or handmade gifts.
The pattern is beginner friendly and suitable if you’re comfortable with basic granny squares and simple colour changes. You can use the squares to create practical Christmas coasters or string them together as festive bunting to decorate your home.

Yarn Choice
For the Granny Tree Coasters & Bunting, I used Yarnsmiths Cotton DK in two colours – off white for the background and Christmas green for the tree sections.
Yarnsmiths Cotton DK is a soft 100% cotton yarn with around 106 metres per 50 g ball. It’s easy to work with, holds its shape well, and is a great choice for small projects like crochet coasters.
You can substitute with any DK weight cotton yarn if you prefer. Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK is a good alternative.
Materials
You’ll need the following materials to make both the coasters and bunting:
DK weight cotton yarn in two colours
3.00 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Buttons (optional)
Ribbon or twine (optional)
You can find all the extras in my Amazon store -
Granny Tree Coasters & Bunting Video Tutorials
I’ve created separate video tutorials for each project, showing you how to crochet the Granny Tree motif and then turn it into either coasters or festive bunting, step by step. If you like to crochet along visually, I recommend watching the videos before you start or alongside the written pattern.

Bunting Optional:
Just as we did for the coasters, you can sew on a cute label for the trunk and a festive button for the top of the tree. We also made a jute bow for the centre pennant you can watch the video tutorial to see how we did this.
Stringing the Bunting
- Lay out all your finished granny tree squares in the order you want them to hang.
- Cut a length of jute twine (or your chosen stringing material) long enough to fit all your pennants, with a little extra at each end for hanging.
- Weave the twine in and out of the gaps between the clusters along the top edge of each granny square.
- Continue threading until all your trees are evenly spaced along the twine.
- You can use ribbon, cotton cord, or even make your own crochet chain if you don’t have twine.
- Once everything is strung, add small bell ornaments or other decorations between each pennant for a super cute festive finish.
