The Perfect Yarn

The Granny Tree Gloves are worked using King Cole Subtle Drifter DK, a soft blend of 69% acrylic, 25% cotton, and 6% wool. This yarn has a lovely feel against the skin, with a gentle sheen and subtle marled tones that give your project a cosy look. It’s perfect for wearable accessories like gloves—lightweight yet warm and comfortable.

The shades used for the pictured gloves are Conifer and Oatmeal. Any soft DK weight yarn will work well as a substitute.

Choosing Your Size

This pattern includes instructions for multiple sizes. The granny square gloves are designed with zero ease for a snug fit.

To choose your size, measure around the fullest part of your hand, just above the thumb and across the knuckles. Pick the size with a finished measurement that closely matches your hand for a snug fit, or size up for a looser fit.

No more than one ball of each colour is used for all sizes.

Granny Tree Gloves Written Pattern

Pattern Details

Yarn: King Cole Subtle Drifter DK (no more than one ball of each colour for all sizes)

Hook: 3.00 mm, 3.50 mm, 4.00 mm

Gauge: See size chart for granny square gauge

Other items: Yarn needle, scissors, buttons or toggles (optional)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

dc2tog – double crochet 2 together

sc2tog – single crochet 2 together

ch – chain

st(s) – stitch(es)

sk – skip

sl st – slip stitch

blo – back loop only

Special Stitches

Granny cluster – 3 dc in same st

sl st2tog – slip stitch 2 together: Insert hook into last st worked and pull up a loop, insert hook into next st and pull up a loop, pull through all loops on hook

Pattern Notes:

• Read the pattern all the way through before starting.
• Ch3 at the start of a round counts as a dc throughout.
• When changing colour, work the final yarn over of the last stitch using the new colour, then continue crocheting with the new colour.
• Carry unused yarn loosely across the back of your work and work over floats on the following row.

Instructions

Granny Squares

Use a 3.00, [3.50, or 4.00] mm hook. Make 2 granny squares using the tree motif, then make 2 plain granny squares in main colour only (use the tree motif pattern but ignore all colour changes).

Tree Motif

With cc, ch 4 and join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1 ch 3, 2 dc into ring, [ch 2, 3 dc into ring] x3, ch 2, join with sl st to top ch 3.

Round 2 sl st in next 2 sts and in corner sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next corner sp x3, join with sl st to top ch 3.

Round 3 

• Sl st in next 2 sts and corner sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, 3 dc in next sp, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner sp, change to mc. 
• 3 dc in next sp, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner sp, change to cc, 3 dc in next sp, change to mc. 
• [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner sp, 3 dc in next sp, change to cc. 
• Join with sl st to top ch 3.

Round 4 

• Sl st in next 2 sts and corner sp, ch 3, [2 dc, change to mc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp. 
• 3 dc in each sp across sides, [3 dc, change to cc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner sp, change to mc. 
• 3 dc in each sp across sides, and [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in each corner. 
• Change to cc on last dc and sl st to top ch 3.

Round 5 sl st in next 2 sts, change to main colour and fasten off contrast colour, sl st in corner sp, [ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, 3 dc in each sp across sides, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in each corner sp, join with sl st to top ch 3. 

Fasten off.

Joining Squares

Join one tree and one plain square. Sew squares together along one side using mattress stitch or preferred method. Then sew the opposite sides together leaving a gap for the thumb. Make sure trees are oriented the right way up and leave the thumb gap on opposite side for each glove.

Top of Glove

With right side facing, join in right-hand corner sp of where 2 squares are joined, on the palm of the glove.

Round 1 ch 3, dc2tog over this and next corner sp, dc in same sp. 3 dc in each sp around, and when reaching where 2 squares are joined, dc in right corner sp, dc2tog over this and next sp, dc in same sp, 3 dc in each remaining sp around, join with sl st to top ch 3.

Round 2 sl st in next 2 sts and in next sp. [ch 3, 2 dc] in same sp, 3 dc in each sp around, join with sl st to top ch 3. Fasten off.

Ribbing

With right side facing, join with a sc to any corner sp on the palm of the glove. Sc in each st around, working sc2tog across the corner joins, and join with sl st to first st.

Now working perpendicular from the cuff edge:

Row 1 ch 15, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sl st in next 2 sts across bottom of glove. Turn.

Row 2 skip sl sts, sc in next st, sl st2tog across. Turn.

Row 3 ch 1, hdc in blo in each st across, sl st in next 2 sts across bottom of glove. Turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have worked around the entire cuff of the glove. Turn glove inside out and join foundation edge of ribbing to last row with sl sts.

Turn glove inside out and join foundation edge of ribbing to last row with sl sts. 

Fasten off and weave in ends.
