About this festive little pattern

This Candy Cane Gift Bag is such a fun make if you enjoy small projects that still look gorgeous when finished. The wattle stitch is simple to remember, and the helix stripes mean your colours stay crisp and tidy without any jogs. You can make one in under an hour, which makes it perfect for last-minute gifts or festive market stalls.

You don’t just have to stick to Christmas colours either. Try pastels for Easter, autumn tones for spooky season treats, or bright colours for birthday goody bags.

Yarn and materials

I made my Candy Cane Gift Bag using Yarnsmiths Cotton DK in Bright Red and Off White. It’s a lovely 100% cotton yarn that gives your bag a neat and sturdy finish. If you’re not able to find this yarn locally, Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK, King Cole Cottonsoft DK, and other 100% cotton DK options work brilliantly too.

For the finishing touches, you’ll need buttons and beads — and you can find both in my Amazon store, along with my favourite crochet tools and accessories.

Gift Bag Instructions

With 3.50 mm hook & mc ch25.
Working in the back bumps

Round 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until last st, 2sc in next st.  Working across bottom of foundation edge
sc in each st across, sc in 1st st (this is where you put your 1st sc). (48sc).

Round 2 starting in the 1st st continue around in Wattle st, untill you have worked half way round (pm in 1st ch1 sp).  Remove hook from mc leaving a long loop.  With sl knot on hook and cc, join with sc and continue in Wattle st to the end of the round (pm in 1st ch1 sp of cc).

Round 3 continue with cc in Wattle stitch until you run out of sts to work into, this will be the last ch1 sp from previous round in the mc (remember to move marker up at the start of each round).  Remove hook from cc leaving a long loop.  Insert hook back into loop from mc and tighten.  Continue around in Wattle st (move 2nd marker up as you go each round).

Round 4 continue in mc in Wattle stitch until you run out of sts to work into.  Remove hook from mc leaving a long loop.  Insert hook back into loop from cc and tighten.  Continue around in Wattle st.

Repeat rounds 3 & 4 until a total of 16 rounds in Wattle stitch have been worked, ending with the cc just before 1st marker and mc just before 2nd marker.

Finishing cc wattle st in next 3 ch1 sp, [sc, ch1, sc] in next sp, sl st in next st, fasten off cc.

Final Rounds remove 1st marker, with mc work 3 more rounds in Wattle st.

Finishing mc wattle st in next 2 ch sp, [sc, ch1, sc] in next sp, sl st in next st, fasten off and weave in ends.

Ties (make 2)
With 3.00 mm hook & cc ch 90 and fasten off.  Repeat for 2nd tie.

  1. Thread one tie onto a darning (tapestry) needle.

  2. Start at one side of the bag on the 3rd row down — insert the needle from the outside to the inside at the point where you want the tie to begin.

  3. Weave the tie in and out between the gaps between the groups of stitches (the spaces between stitch clusters), following the row line.

  4. Continue weaving the tie all the way around the bag, keeping the the tie flat as you go.

  5. Finish by bringing the needle out at the same spot where you first inserted it (so the tie’s ends meet at that point).

  6. Thread a bead onto both free ends of the tie.

  7. Tie both ends together in a secure knot directly after the bead.

  8. Repeat steps 1–7 with the second tie on the opposite side of the bag (start on the 3rd row down on that side).

  9. To close the bag, pull both ties.

Tips
Choose beads with holes large enough for your tie; use a darning needle with a blunt tip to avoid splitting yarn; test the knot and bead position before trimming tails.
