Yarn Choice

For the Granny Tree Gift Bag, I used Yarnsmiths Cotton DK in two colours – off white for the background and Christmas green for the tree sections.

Yarnsmiths Cotton DK is a soft 100% cotton yarn with around 106 metres per 50 g ball. It’s easy to work with, holds its shape well, and is a great choice for small projects like crochet gift bags.

You can substitute with any DK weight cotton yarn if you prefer. Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK is a good alternative.

Materials

You’ll need the following materials to make the Granny Tree Gift Bag:

  • DK weight cotton yarn in two colours

  • 4.00 mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

  • Buttons (optional)

  • Ribbon or twine (optional)

You can find all of these in my Amazon store -

Granny Tree Gift Bag Video Tutorial

I’ve created a full video tutorial showing how to make the Granny Tree motif and how to turn it into a gift bag step by step. If you prefer to crochet along visually, I recommend watching the video before or alongside the written pattern.

Joining Squares

We used a contrasting colour for joining but you can use any colour you like. With right sides facing upwards and squares side by side, join the top left corner of one square to the top right corner of the other, using the braided sl st joining method as follows:

  • With sl knot on hook, join with sl st to top left corner of the first square in the corner st in BLO.
  • Next, sl st in the second square in the top right corner in BLO.
  • Now, sl st in the next st on the first square in BLO.
  • Then, sl st in the next st on the second square in BLO.
  • Repeat this process around the entire square, joining as you go with a sl st in each stitch around, alternating between the first and second square.
  • Continue until you have joined the squares together, leaving the top unjoined. You should finish in the top right corner of the first square.

Top of Bag

Starting in any corner sp join the MC.

Round 1 ch3, 2dc in same sp, 3dc in each sp around (working in the spaces between stitches of the granny squares and in corner spaces), join with sl st to top ch3. (12 granny clusters)

Round 2 sl st in next 2 sts and next sp, ch3, 2dc in same sp, 3dc in each sp around, join with sl st to top ch3. (12 granny clusters)

Repeat round 2 twice more.

Round 5 ch1, in next st [sc, ch3, sc, sk1] repeat around, join with sl st to 1 sc.

Finishing the Granny Tree Gift Bag

Once your bag is complete, you can add ribbon or twine through the granny clusters to tie the top closed. A small bow and a festive button make a lovely finishing touch and turn this into a really special handmade gift. You can see exactly how we made ours in the video tutorial.
