Crunch Stitch (Even Moss Stitch) Tutorial – Easy One Row Repeat
Hello yarn lovers. Today we’re learning a stitch that is super simple, wonderfully textured, and perfect for so many cosy projects. If you love stitches that look fancy but are actually mindless and relaxing to work, the crunch stitch (also known as the even moss stitch) is definitely one you’ll want to add to your favourites.
This stitch is a one-row repeat, works up quickly, and looks the same on both sides – which is always a bonus. It gives you a thick, spongy, beautifully textured fabric that’s brilliant for everyday makes.
Before we get into the actual tutorial, let’s take a look at why you might want to use this stitch in your next project.
What You Can Make with the Even Moss Stitch
Because this stitch has such a soft, dense texture, it’s perfect for practical, hard-working projects. Here are a few ideas:
It’s a really versatile stitch, and because it’s such an easy one-row repeat, it’s great for crocheters who want something simple and relaxing.
Yarn and Hook Tips
You can use absolutely any yarn and hook you already have. In the tutorial, I’m using an aran yarn with a 5.5 mm hook, but feel free to use the hook size recommended on your yarn label. If you want more drape (perfect for blankets or scarves), go up a hook size or two because this stitch is naturally quite dense.

If you're a visual learner, here’s the full crunch stitch video tutorial. I’ll walk you through each step so you can follow along easily. The video shows you how to start your chain, how to work each stitch, and how to keep your rows neat and consistent.

You can make your starting chain as wide as you like. Just make sure you begin with any odd number of chains.
Chain any odd numberRow 1: sl st in 2nd ch from hook, [hdc in next st, sl st in next st] repeat across ending with hdc in last st. Turn.
Repeat Row 2 for as long as you like.
You’ll notice the texture starts to appear after just a couple of rows. The stitch pattern stays beautifully consistent, thick, and neat.
Try making a practice swatch in cotton yarn and you will have yourself a pretty dishcloth (8-9 inches square is a good size).
