Exploring the Prairie Stitch
The Prairie Cottontail Washcloths are crocheted using the prairie stitch, which creates a really pretty texture that’s almost lacy.
This stitch is made by alternating rows of single crochet and half double crochet, with a simple repeat of skipping a stitch and working two stitches into the next stitch.
What I love about the prairie stitch is that it’s easy to remember and really relaxing to crochet. It's a simple 2 row repeat and perfect for TV crochet.
It’s a simple stitch pattern, but it works really well for projects where you want something that looks really pretty, without anything too complicated.
Make Your Crochet Washcloth Unique
One of the best things about this crochet bunny washcloth pattern is how easy it is to customise.
You can change the colours, add ribbon or twine, or make a full set in coordinating shades. These are perfect for creating handmade Easter gifts or adding a little bit of spring to your home.
They’re also ideal for using up leftover yarn and turning it into something both useful and beautiful.
About the Yarn
For this crochet washcloth pattern, I used Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran, which is a 100% cotton yarn.
The Prairie Cottontail Washcloth pattern is made using Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran, a 100% cotton Aran weight yarn. Each 50g ball contains 80m (87 yards), providing excellent stitch definition and a soft, absorbent texture that is ideal for washcloths and home projects.
The cotton feels gentle on the skin while remaining durable, making it perfect for everyday use. The pattern uses two colours and requires a little over 50g of yarn in total, giving you a small, quick project that is also great for gifting.
If you don’t have this yarn, you can easily substitute with:

Assembly
You can either tie the pom pom to one of the corners and sew in the ends. This leaves the pom pom permanently attached to the cloth.
Alternatively, you can use a piece of jute twine or cotton yarn, to tie around the centre of the pom pom, then thread the ends through one of the corners and tie it around the centre of the bunny. This way, the pom pom is purely decorative and can be removed whenever you wish to use the washcloth. Another option is to attach the pom pom to a little button which can be attached to the corner.
Once your pom pom is attached, place your cloth with the wrong side facing upwards and starting from the opposite corner from the pom pom, roll from corner to corner. Fold both sides upwards to form the shape of the bunny, leaving the tail poking out at the front. Tie with jute twine or ribbon to hold in place.
This crochet bunny washcloth pattern is the perfect mix of practical and cute, making it ideal for Easter crochet, spring projects, and handmade gifts.
