Meet Dumpling, a rescue cat story... & Free crochet blanket pattern

Meet Dumpling, she lives with Little T's dad and Little T absolutely adores her.  She was a rescue cat from Battersea Cats and Dogs home and not very much was known about her life before she was taken in.  She was found as a stray and taken care of by Battersea.  Little T's dad had previously had another cat "Marmite" who had died in a tragic accident and felt it was time to get another.  So we all went together to the cats home and it was decided that Dumpling would be the one to come home with us.

At first she was afraid to go outside and was very wary of us, but she soon settled in and over time has started to go outside.  She doesn't stray far though, always staying close by.  She likes to play with Little T, he always insists on buying her toys every time we go to the pet shop and he likes to give her "Dreamies" for treats.  When she first came home she had a lovely hand knitted blanket that someone had made and donated to the shelter, it's good for cats to have something familiar when they first go to their new home.

Cat and dog shelters are always on the lookout for hand knitted or crocheted blankets, so I thought it would be a nice idea to make some blankets myself to donate.  My local shelter prefers knitted blankets as kittens can sometimes get their paws stuck in the holes that crochet blankets often have.  So I thought I would design a blanket, with no holes for little kitties to get their tiny paws stuck.  This pattern is great for using up your stash and can be made with any yarn.  I had some giant 400g balls of "cheap" Aran yarn, that had been lying forgotten in a tub somewhere.  I bought it on a whim because it was a "bargain" and never used it because it wasn't very soft.  I'm sure you all have some of "that" yarn in your stash.  So go on dig it out and make a rescue cat or dog happy...

Cat Blanket No.1

Materials

Aran / Worsted from your stash

Hook

6mm (J)

Size

Approx. 85 x 85cm (33 x 33 inches)

Ability

Intermediate

Abbreviations US Terms (UK Conversion)

ldc – linked double crochet (linked treble crochet)
dc –double crochet (treble crochet)
sc – single crochet (double crochet)
ch - chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
yo – yarn over

Special Stitches

Linkeddouble crochet: Insert hook into horizontal bar of previous st, yo and pull through loop, insert hook into next st, yo and pull up a loop, yo pull through 2 loops, yo pull through remaining 2 loops.

Other notes:  This pattern is designed with kittens in mind.  Linked double crochet creates a dense fabric, with no holes for little kitties to get their tiny paws stuck.  I used Aran / worsted yarn for mine with a 6mm (J) hook; but could just as easily be made with any gauge yarn.  Just use a hook size recommended on your yarn ball band.  Use as many colours as you like and change colours at will.  When changing colour, pull new colour through last st of row.

Blanket

Make a ch as long as you would like the width of your blanket to be (I chained 100 for mine).

Row 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, ldc in each ch across.  Turn.  (98ldc)

Row 2 ch2 (does not count as st), dc in 1st st, ldc in each st across.  Turn.  (98ldc)

Repeat row 2 until you have completed 54 rows (or blanket is required length).  Fasten off.

Border

Round 1 Join with sl st to any st along top of blanket, ch1, sc in same st, sc in every st across top and bottom of blanket, 3sc in each corner, along sides sc evenly across (how many sc you work along the sides will depend on your tension.  I found for every 6 rows I needed 10sc.  If your sides start to pull in you don’t have enough sts and if your sides start to go wavy, you have too many).  Join with sl st to starting sc.

Round 2 ch1 sc in same st, sc in every sc, 3sc in every corner st, join with sl st to starting sc.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

If you would like a wider border you may repeat round 2 until you reach desired width.

Make a blanket for a rescue cat - Free crochet patterns selected by Lullaby Lodge...

My local Cat & Dog shelter is always looking for blankets for their rescue animals, so I thought a great way to use up some stash, that might not otherwise get used, would be to make some blankets for them.  We have a Battersea Cats and Dogs home in Windsor where I live and they generally prefer knitted blankets to crochet ones, especially for kittens as they can easily get their paws stuck in the holes that crochet blankets often have.  So I have hunted down some patterns that I think will be suitable for cats (or dogs).  The patterns I have chosen are not all specifically designed for cats but all have very little or no holes and can all be made with stash yarn (woohoo use up that stash!).

Blankets for Rescue Cats

This first blanket is actually designed as a baby blanket, but as it creates a close knit fabric, would make a great blanket for cats.  The pattern is by Sunset Knots.

Woven Stitch Baby Cat Blanket

This next blanket is made up with loads of lovely textural squares.  A great project for using up all those leftovers.  The pattern is by Heart Hook Home.

Creighton's Blanket

This blanket is specifically designed for shelter cats and the pattern is by Lindsay Allercott.

Animal Shelter Kitty Blanket

Another blanket that is designed for babies, but as it has such a dense fabric this will be a great choice for cats.  The pattern is by Kim Guzman and you can find it on her blog.

Straight to the Heart Baby Cat Blanket

This blanket by Linda Davie has a lovely texture to it and is designed specially to have no holes...

No Holes Baby Cat Blanket

My final selection is a fabulous stash buster project, gorgeously colourful and stripy (let's not think about those ends...).  The pattern is by Crochet Instinct.

Scrap Yarn Stash Buster Blanket

Don't lose it, pin it!

I hope you enjoyed my selections and feel inspired to make a blanket for a rescue cat or dog.  I also have some exciting news, I have a new blanket pattern just released and it has been designed especially for rescue kittens and for using up your stash.

Hello friends, we have come to the end of spring, so it is time to do a temperature blanket update.  It has been so lovely seeing all your progress over at the Facebook Group.  Your blankets are all looking amazing and all so different too.  If you are only just joining us you can find the free pattern here...

We have had a pretty cold spring here in Windsor.  My colours have been mostly blues and greens...

...with the addition of a few rows in yellows and peach.  It's so nice to see some warmer colours.

After a few weeks of warmer temperatures the weather has turned cold again.

Looking forward to seeing some oranges and red, hopefully that summer weather is on its way.

Thanks for checking in and I will see you all again soon.

2019 Temperature Blanket Free Pattern & Crochet Along - Winter Update

Hello everyone.  How are you all getting on with your temperature blankets?  Mine is coming along nicely and as Winter is now over (hopefully) I thought I would post an update and a few pictures.  If this is your first time to my blog you can find the free pattern linked below and don't think it's too late to join in, you can start a temperature blanket at any time if year.

2019 Temperature Blanket Free Pattern

My temperature blanket started off as just a concept and some yarn pegs to help me choose my pallet...

The beginning of the year was cold but never reached the kind of temperatures we had last year so some of my colours have not been used.

There is nothing better thank a cup of tea and a little crochet in the mornings, I try to do my row each morning when I wake up.

Spring seems to have come early this year as temperatures have been unusually high.  Who would've thought we could have t-shirt weather in February.

Looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year will bring...

Don't forget to post your photos on the Facebook Group page or on Instagram using #lullabylodge.

I will post another update at the end of spring...

Ta ta for now

Stash Busting - The Ron Weasley Blanket

Over the Christmas holidays we always binge watch the Harry Potter Movies.  Whilst watching Prisoner of Azkaban I happened to notice a gorgeous, scrappy, hand knitted blanket on Ron Weasley's bed (Molly Weasley I do so love all your makes).  I instantly knew this would make an awesome stash busting project and I had to start straight away.

A quick search found a brilliant guide by Jackie Wierzbick on her blog Penguineer's Purls and you can find the pattern page here...  She has painstakingly collected lots of photos of the blanket and produced them into a layout grid and a guide for each knitted block.  The squares are all knitted in garter stitch (which I love especially for "TV" knitting).  There is also a crochet version which you can find here...

So off I went to rummage through my stash.  I have a great deal of those huge 400g balls of aran yarn I bought "cos it's cheap" that never got used (because it wasn't soft enough for baby blankets).  I thought these would be ideal and I have so many other odds and ends that I am sure I can find something to match most of the colours.  I'm not too worried though as the blanket is meant to look scrappy, so if the colours aren't an exact match I will just use the closest yarn I can find.

Now anyone who knows me will know that I am not very keen on sewing. The thought of all those squares to sew together at the end appalled me.  I have made knitted shawls previously that had knitted on edges so thought there must be a way to knit the squares together as I went along.  With a bit of experimentation I have managed it (almost), the diagonal squares proved to be more of a conundrum than my non mathematical brain could handle, so I am knitting those squares separately and then stitching them on.  At lease there is not many of those to do, so this means that I will be able to join most of the squares as I go along.  I think I will write up a guide of how to do this if anyone is interested?

You can see the knitted together join here (nice and tidy)...

I can't tell you how enjoyable it is sitting watching Harry Potter movies with Little T and knitting along happily with my scrappy squares.  I can't wait to see the blanket progress and I am really pleased so far with how the join as you go approach is working.  I don't think my sewing would look anywhere near as neat.

As you can see the stitched join here (not so tidy).

I have almost 2 full rows of squares finished and am running out of Harry Potter movies to watch.

I will post again soon as the blanket progresses.  Do you have piles of stash languishing in boxes begging to be knitted or crocheted with?  Why not make a stash busting blanket yourself, I would love to see your photos...

See you soon
